NAIROBI, Kenya — Grief has engulfed families across Kenya as investigations intensify into the tragic Sunday road crash along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway that claimed at least 24 lives.
The disaster occurred on Sunday, October 25, 2026, near Mtito Andei in southeastern Kenya. A church bus carrying passengers back from a bishop's burial service in Lugari, western Kenya, collided with an oncoming tipper truck.
The Fatal Maneuver
According to initial police reports, the bus driver was attempting to overtake several vehicles roughly 10 kilometers outside Mtito Andei when he encountered the oncoming truck. In a desperate attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the driver veered off the asphalt.
• Loss of control: The bus overturned as it exited the main highway.
• The impact: The oncoming tipper truck plowed directly into the rolling bus.
• Fatalities: The truck driver and at least 23 bus passengers were killed instantly.
Rising Death Toll and Public Outcry
The Mtito Andei crash marks the second major catastrophe on this specific arterial route in less than a month. Just three weeks prior, another horrific collision on the same highway claimed 17 lives.
The wreckage of both the bus and the cement truck remains parked at the Mtito Andei Police Station while traffic investigators examine the mechanical integrity of both vehicles.
In response to the mounting fatalities, transport authorities and government officials have promised a strict, renewed crackdown targeting reckless overtaking, speeding, and long-distance driver fatigue. Meanwhile, distraught families continue arriving at local morgues to identify their loved ones, demanding safer infrastructure on Kenya’s busiest transit corridor.
