INDEPENDENT HOW-TO GUIDE
How to compare a course with your career goals
Compare a course against your interests, required subjects, study route and the work it can lead to before making placement choices.
A course should fit more than your KCSE grade. Check the subjects and skills you enjoy, the entry requirements, professional accreditation where relevant, study costs and what graduates typically do. Avoid choosing solely because someone calls a course “marketable.”
01
Before you begin
- List a few subjects or activities you enjoy and the kind of work environment you prefer.
- Gather your KCSE grades and subject results.
- Keep an open mind about degree, diploma, certificate and TVET routes.
02
Steps to follow
- Choose two or three career fields to investigate rather than committing to a title immediately.
- Use KUCCPS career guidance and course information to identify related programmes.
- For each programme, verify entry and subject requirements on the official Student’s Portal.
- Check what the curriculum teaches, the practical or attachment requirements and whether the profession has a regulator or licensing requirements.
- Compare institutions, location, duration and affordability, then shortlist alternatives before your placement choices are final.
- Discuss the shortlist with a qualified career adviser, school career teacher or relevant professional when possible.
03
Important notes
- No course guarantees a job or a particular salary. Employment depends on skills, performance, experience, labour-market conditions and other factors.
- Use current official programme and regulator information to verify qualifications and professional requirements.
- This is a decision-making framework, not a personalised assessment or an employment forecast.
